I'd like to talk about Knowledge Tree, but I think it deserves a separate discussion: http://k12opensource.ning.com/group/opensourceserverapps/forum/topics/moving-away-from-windows-file

I don't have experience with BitNami, but I use these: http://www.turnkeylinux.org - very nice! http://www.rpath.com (more of a hit-and-miss)

Greetings from this realm of education, creativity, despair, and stoicism. Funding continues to drain away for the purchase of weapons and in order to repair extensive damages to our society ravaged by greedy corporate looters. I am irked that so ma…

Hi everyone. My name is Marty. As a psychologist, I have been helping children learn for about 10 years. In 2003, I became very interested in the new software I was seeing and how we could use it to solve the literacy problem. I really like the expe…

Hi Helen One place that you (or any teacher interested in Open Source) might want to explore is http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/#softwareoncd - the Trinidad & Tobago Computer Society's site that provides a free CD (downloadable iso image that lets…

BlackBoard is a name that many regard as not a promoter of Open Source, and in fact they may be quite the opposite: "The patents at the center of the dispute were awarded to Blackboard a year ago, and their breadth is a key part of the dispute. Crit…

About Me

I am the director of the K12 Open Technologies Initiative at the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), and am the founder of the Classroom 2.0 social network (www.classroom20.com).

I blog, speak, and consult on educational technology, and am particularly passionate about Free and Open Source Software, Web 2.0, computer reuse, and computing for low-income populations. I run the Open Source Pavilion and speaker series for the NECC and CUE shows, am the organizer of EduBloggerCon, and hold a series of free workshops around the country (Classroom 2.0 LIVE) to help educators learn about the educational uses of the participative aspect of the Web.

I consult for Ning, running their http://education.ning.com site as well as many others. I am also the Emerging Technologies Chair for NECC, a regular columnist at School Library Journal, and a blogger at www.SteveHargadon.com, the Infinite Thinking Machine and TechLearning. My podcast series on educational technologies can be found at www.EdTechLive.com and at Classroom 2.0.

My wife and I have four children.

Thanks Steve. I'd like to do that. (It will have to wait until after Jan. though. We are in the midst of moving our offices -- and the rest of our lives -- and it is insane.:)

Btw, I did a couple Web 2.0 workshops today and introduced another crew to Classroom 2.0. It is such a valuable resource and community.

Dear Steve, Another great idea building on Classroom 2.0. I have joined this group today as I believe the work we are doing in the UK building Learning Communities to enable teachers to become a "human filter" on the Internet to create new educational resources called Learning Journeys (curriculum objectives, internet resources & assessment) and make these available to individual teachers for free needs wider visibility and support. Could you please look at my home page here, let me have your thoughts and help me spread the word. Regards Ian

Hi Steve, Thanks for creating this community. I am looking for any support I can get in the Open Source Arena. This is new territory for me and my district but I am hoping that it will pay off in the end.
