I also have a Wordpress MU installation which provides free blogging (in Hebrew) for educators and students. http://edutec.co.il/edublogs and am presently trying to understand the instructions for setting up a mediawiki wiki farm, so if you have any advice it would be welcome
Have been playing around with elgg but so far haven't had time to fully explore it - and am waiting until it is a bit more stable. I did however translate version 1.09 to Hebrew and some of the plugins which can be found on the elggcommunity
